El día de acción de gracias reviste un significado especial para este país.
El día de acción de gracias reviste un significado especial para este país, pero pocos parecen recordar el origen mismo de la celebración, hay incluso quien pretende verlo así:
“Los peregrinos (Pilgrims) llegaron a Plymouth Rock el 11 de Diciembre de 1620. El primer invierno fue muy duro para ellos. Pero el siguiente otoño, ellos obtuvieron una buena cosecha de las semillas que ellos plantaron. Decidieron celebrarlo con una gran cena, incluyendo a los indios que les habían ayudado a sobrevivir el primer año.
Los hombres se fueron a cazar, a conseguir carne para la cena. No se sabe a ciencia cierta si los pavos de la región fueron parte de la cena, ya que ellos usaban el término “pavo” para cualquier clase de ave silvestre”.
Una gran simplificación de la realidad, pero que en cierta forma envuelve el verdadero sentido de la celebración, que no es otro que dar gracias a Dios por sobrevivir a la adversidad.
En realidad al momento de la primera celebración ya habían pasado cerca de 130 años del desembarco de los europeos en América que comprende, aunque muchos quisieran olvidarlo, a las Américas continentales, el Caribe e innumerables islas en los dos océanos. Esto quiere decir que han sucedido para ese entonces innumerables historias de solidaridad y traición en estas tierras en las que estuvieron involucrados los nativos americanos y los recién llegados europeos.
Y en el otoño de 1621 tuvo lugar una en particular que daría nacimiento a la que considero la principal celebración norteamericana después del día de la independencia: el Día de Acción Gracias.
Según retazos que se conservan de la historia, 102 peregrinos del Mayflower salieron de Plymouth, Inglaterra. Era un grupo variado de separatistas religiosos que buscaban un lugar donde practicar libremente sus creencias gozando de la prosperidad en el Nuevo Mundo, que llegaron un mes después a Cape Cod, bastante más al norte de su destino original, en el nacimiento del río Hudson. Un mes más tarde cruzaron la bahía de Massachusetts e intentaron fundar un pueblo llamado igual a su lugar original Plymouth. Sufrieron un brutal primer invierno y sólo la mitad de los peregrinos logró sobrevivir. Y he aquí que comienza la parta interesante. Una vez que llega la primavera, en marzo, los peregrinos que habían pasado el invierno en el barco se mudan a la costa donde reciben la visita de un indio Abenaki quien los saludo en inglés. ¡Tamaña sorpresa! Y por si fuera poco, les ayudó a entenderse con los vecinos Wampanoag, con quienes forjaron una alianza que duró 50 años. Ese segundo año, con la primera cosecha tuvieron una celebración que duró tres días y que perduraría con el nombre de Día de Acción de Gracias.
Menciono todo esto porque recuerdo una historia que me contaba mi amigo Antonio de un santo venerado en su pueblo llamado San Guibin, al que llaman el Santo del Inmigrante, pregonando que el que da recibe, y este santo de origen muy popular hace milagros que todavía están vivos en la memoria de su gente.
Ese San Guibin suena muy parecido a Thanksgiving, me parece, no en balde los mexicanos llaman a este día el Día del Pavo y organizan unas fiestas muy animadas muy diferentes a las recogidas celebraciones familiares de los norteamericanos. En tanto personas de los más variados orígenes celebran también ese día con la única intención de dar gracias al Creador por todo lo bueno recibido.

Thanksgiving Day has a very special meaning for this country, but few remember the very origin of this celebration, and there are even some that chose to see it like this:

They decided to celebrate this with a great dinner, inviting the Indians that helped them survive this first year.
The men went hunting; they went looking for meat for this dinner party. It is not known if the region’s turkeys were part of this meal, because they used the term ‘turkey’ to name any kind of wild bird.”
A great simplification of the real story, but in some way it depicts the real meaning of this celebration, which is no other than to give thanks to God for having survived adversity.
Actually, at the time of this first celebration, 130 years had already gone by since Europeans put foot in America, which comprises (despite many would like to forget) all continental America, the Caribbean and numerous islands in both oceans. This means that, by that time, innumerable stories of solidarity and betrayal had occurred in these grounds were the Native Americans and the European newcomers were involved.
And in autumn of 1621 took place one in particular that gave birth to what I consider the main North American tradition after Independence Day: Thanksgiving.
According to remaining bits and pieces of history, 102 pilgrims of the Mayflower embarked in Plymouth, England. It was a varied group of religious separatists looking for a place to freely practice their beliefs enjoying the prosperity of the New World. They arrived one month later to Cape Cod, way up north from their original destiny, in the Hudson’s source. A month later they crossed the Massachusetts Bay and attempted to found a town named after their original settlement, Plymouth. They suffered a brutal first winter and only half of the pilgrims survived. And here is where the interesting part begins. Once spring arrived in March, the pilgrims that had spent winter in the ship move to the coast, where they received the visit of an Indian, Abenaki, who greeted them in English. What a surprise! And it doesn’t stop here. Days later, he comes back with Squanto, who had been captured and enslaved by an Englishman that took him to London, from where he escaped and returned to his land along a group of explorers. Not minding having been a slave, Squanto was the one to teach the pilgrims to grow corn, extract the honey from the Maple trees, fish in the nearby rivers and avoid poisonous plants. And if it wasn’t enough, he helped them achieve an understanding with their neighbors Wampanoag, with whom they forge an Alliance that lasted 50 years. That second year, with the first harvest, they had a celebration that lasted three days and that would endure with the name of Thanksgiving.
And I mention all this because I remember a story that my friend Antonio used to tell me about a revered saint in his town called San Guibin, the patron saint of the immigrant, spreading around that who gives, receives; and this saint, of very humble origin makes miracles that are still alive in the memory of his people.
That San Guibin sounds a lot like Thanksgiving, I believe. No wonder the Mexicans call it Turkey Day and organize very festive parties a lot different from the quiet family celebration of the North Americans, while people of the most varied origin also celebrate this day with the sole intention of thanking the Creator for all the good things received.
