Chef Antonio Ramos, Estefania and Giovanni
Woman Entrepreneur of the Year: Stefanía Panza
It’s a success that restaurant-owner Stefanía Panza, winner of this year’s Delaware Entrepreneur Woman of the Year award from the New Castle County Chamber of Commerce, built from the ground up. She was honored at the Nov. 17 Business Women’s Expo., with the most important award that is given away.
Not every day does one find out that the owner of the restaurant that our family enjoys the most has been given the most important award that exists at the entrepreneurial level in Delaware. Since we met Estefanía and Giovanni, who are Venezuelan like we are, we became fans of the quality of their dishes and of the atmosphere of Sofritos, which reminds us of the attention you receive in our own country where the owner of the restaurant goes from table to table, greeting the clients, explaining the dishes and sharing a pleasant time with them.
The personality of this establishment obviously has the Italian touch as its name implies, Sofrito’s Italian Grill, but there is something more, which is perhaps the contribution of its young Chef Antonio Ramos as well as the years of experience that Estefania and Giovanni have gathered in this business.
Since she was a very young child, Estefanía grew in the shadow of the pots of her family’s restaurant in Napoles; from there stems the pride of her parents that accompanied her to collect the well deserved award. Giovanni’s parents were also there; needless to say they came from Venezuela for the special occasion.
Continuing with her story, even though Estefanía studied architecture at College Park in Maryland, she joined the team of the Lamberti restaurant, well known for its quality and where her brother works and where she ended up marrying the Cheff; there she remained 12 years and discovered her true passion: Cooking for people.
Estefanía considers that cooking is making people happy and that to own a successful business you cannot be alone, you need a ‘family’ for it to function. And a family is what she has made with her husband and their children at Sofrito’s, since after 5 years of starting this gastronomic venture the Panza’s and their 38 employees have come together in such a way that they have lunch together daily and they share each one’s concerns; that is why the company is based on the values of family, customs and traditions.
Reaching the position she holds today was not easy, since there were personal and financial difficulties along the way that were overcome with determination, until being able to make Estefanía’s dream of having a restaurant with her own seal, a reality, and of course, satisfying her clientelle by making them the creditors of more than a dozen awards over the past five years, the last of which we are celebrating today, Estefanía Panza: Entrepreneur of the Year.
Estefanía knows it is possible, as a woman, to be successful, and that is why she says, “Always have faith in your project, focus on your project and be realistic.” Apparently its a winning formula, and we send our congratulations to Estefanía, Giovanni, their children, parents, friends, and the cat.
