To come in you must open the door
It is fairly difficult to get in the shoes of the person that leaving prison seeks to reinsert into society; however, with the right connections, recovery is possible.
Door after door closes creating a vicious circle which is extremely difficult to get out of. However, it is possible, as is the case of Mike Reyes, a Dominican who, after being on top of the world with his own television program, ‘El Rincon Latino’, the first of its kind in Delaware, let himself be carried away seeking pleasure and money, and saw himself immerse in a whirlwind which would land him very low and in jail. The best ingredients of a Hollywood script: Sex, and drugs, a story we will tell some day.
Today Reyes works in the reinsertion program Community Connections helping other ex-convicts seeking employment, a first step for complete social reinsertion.
Reyes does not hide his past, he knows it still haunts him but says that “it is up to each one of us to seek a way out, and, of course, so much better if one has support.”
For this article, El Tiempo Hispano spoke with Reyes, with Kenneth l. Watson, Director of Employment Services at Connections and with Captain of the Salvation Army, Reverend Miguel Barriera in order to know what is being done by other organizations to open the doors to those who wish to rehabilitate.
Connections CSP Inc. seeks to improve the life of those most vulnerable by providing a wide array of services that will help them be accepted and become productive members of their community.
The reinsertion program of Community Connections seeks individuals that are about to be released from jail, or that recently have been, to orient them regarding social services, housing, or health, with the help of case managers. This past April, Reyes joined the group as bi-lingual counselor in order to connect their clients with their employers.
Mr. Watson explains that his agency understands that it is very important for them to be able to offer services in Spanish for those who need them and in this manner not have to refer their clients to other agencies “we need to be capable of providing services at home, so that people do not have to go from one place to another to have services.” For Watson it would be important to have a satellite office available to assist the Hispanic population, “that is my objective,” he says.
On his part, Barriera goes into the need that he sees of working more with prevention and creating spaces for young people that are seeking employment, so they may really have a chance at finding it, “we must remember that the lack of opportunities in many cases lead these young people to commit crimes. Their needs are the same as everybody else’s, shoes, food, housing, and even that little extra for those dates with a girlfriend or boyfriend which they are at the age of initiating.” Barriera continues explaining that “we have found ourselves with many difficulties trying to help people that want to be rehabilitated to get their feet where they belong, and that is because the programs being offered are only in English.”
Many are the cases of young people that find a job and that three or fourth months later, when they have their background checked, are immediately fired, the system blocks them out, they are out of the work force and they see themselves forced to go back to what they did before, “if the system does not change and if opportunities are not offered, Barriera asks himself, “How are we supposed to get out of this vicious circle? Even the Bible says it: the idle mind plots sin.”
Finally, Reyes explains that there is a program that offers incentives to employers that hire ex-convicts since they receive between $2,400 and $4,000 in tax credits. This helps reduce hiring costs and develops a favorable work environment because the employer shows a desire to help someone in a position of disadvantage.
In summary it is necessary to open the door so that those, who for some reason have been left out, may come into society with opportunities of success.

They should be supported in their journey to social reinsertion. Even though they might be ex-convicts, still they are humans. They are still the same with us that needs to survive in this harsh world. They must be accepted and b given jobs to continue their lives, they should also be helped to win against IRS since they in the beginning of their new life.
